Buying a SIM card is a quick and inexpensive process, which you can find specific stores and kiosks readily available all over Bangkok. Such places include the stalls at the airport, at malls from the various service providers mentioned in the ‘Telecommunications and Television’ section, or at the numerous 7- Elevens throughout Bangkok. Whether you are planning to get a tourist ‘top-up’ plan, prepaid plan, or a long term monthly plan, you will be required to register your SIM card. To register your SIM card you must bring your passport with you. You will also be required to have your photo taken when buying your local SIM.
From then you should be able to choose from the numerous plans available. ‘Top-up’ plans are usually a good option for short term visits of one to two weeks, these plans can be found at the airport, or tourist areas. These SIM cards are usually free requiring a top up, or a weekly payment. You can top up your SIM at any local 7-Eleven. Prepaid plans are suggested for longer stays of one to six months. These plans will often offer better rates and more options. If you are planning to stay for a year or more a post pay or contract plan may be a good option. Most contract plans come with a minimum of three months. We suggest speaking with a service provider representative at their stores. They should be able to provide you with the best package for your needs.
It is good to note that SMS or text messaging is not free in Thailand, and is usually not a feature included in most phone plans, although you could choose to add it on. Also please be aware that text messaging in English can cost more than in Thai. Some companies may charge per character for messages written in English, as opposed to messages written in Thai which usually charge per message. It is best to ask your service provider before buying an additional text message plan.
